Position Summary

The University of Colorado School of Medicine (CU SOM) seeks an innovative and collaborative Director of Education and Innovation to serve under the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Designated Institutional Official (ACGME DIO). The GME Director of Education and Innovation will provide leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for the institution’s residency and fellowship training programs. The Director will assist the DIO in ensuring compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements while fostering an environment of continuous educational innovation through faculty development, resident and fellow curricular development, and improvement in feedback, evaluation, and assessment of mastery.

In collaboration with the DIO, program directors, faculty, and hospital leadership, the Director will lead initiatives to enhance competency-based medical education (CBME), explore non-time-based training models, implement other emerging innovations in graduate medical education, and assure best practices in medical education and faculty development are practiced on campus. This role is critical in advancing CUSOM’s reputation as a leader in transformational medical education and ensuring that its residency and fellowship graduates are role models of the well-rounded physician leader, prepared to excel in modern healthcare environments.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Administration

  • Develop and implement institutional policies and best practices around curricular design, feedback, evaluation and assessment.
  • Serve as a key resource for program directors and coordinators on resident development, faculty development, and curriculum innovation.
  • Lead efforts to continuously improve the quality and effectiveness of CU’s graduate training programs.
  • Lead existing signature GME educational efforts including ongoing faculty development; bi-annual new PD/APD onboarding; the IHQSE-led Chief Resident leadership course; the annual GME Leadership Retreat; the GME Data Dashboard Project
  • Develop new centralized (GME) educational offerings and resourcesOversee faculty development initiatives to enhance teaching, mentorship, and evaluation skills among GME educators.
  • Encourage faculty participation in national medical education conferences, research, and scholarship opportunities.

Accreditation & Compliance

  • Support program directors in preparing for ACGME site visits, self-studies, and accreditation reviews as it relates to faculty development, curriculum, feedback, and evaluation

Graduate Medical Education Innovation & Competency-Based Training

  • Lead the exploration and implementation of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) and other non-time-based training models, in alignment with national trends and ACGME initiatives.
  • Lead the effort to get all programs on campus to refine and utilize individualized learning plans to support the success of residents and fellows.
  • Develop and assess pilot programs for individualized learning pathways, flexible training timelines, and competency progression frameworks.
  • Support GME faculty in the development of innovative assessment tools, personalized learning plans, and simulation-based training to enhance resident and fellow education.
  • Partner with national organizations, academic leaders, and medical education researchers to advance and disseminate best practices in graduate medical education innovation. 

Resident & Fellow Development

  • Work closely with the GME Director of Coaching and Wellbeing to promote resident and fellow well-being, resilience, and professional identity formation.
  • Foster a culture of inclusion within GME programs, ensuring access to resources, mentorship, and career development opportunities for all residents and fellows.
  • Support initiatives that integrate interprofessional education, leadership training, and research engagement for trainees.

Faculty Development & Mentorship

  • Work closely with the SOM Associate Dean for Faculty Development to continuously engage with GME faculty to hone and improve their GME-related education skills.
  • Promote the use of modern instructional methodologies, formative assessment tools, and feedback mechanisms to support trainee growth.

Supervision Received

This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education/ACGME Designated Institutional Official.

Supervision Exercised

  • No direct reports
  • This position Chairs the GMEC Education Subcommittee, consisting of 20-30 volunteer members of the GME community, including program directors, associate directors, program coordinators, and housestaff members.

Qualifications

Required

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, EdD, or equivalent) with substantial experience in medical education.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills with a track record of implementing educational innovations.
  • Experience in curriculum development, faculty mentoring, and program evaluation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with institutional leaders, hospital administration, faculty, and trainees.

Preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in graduate medical education leadership (e.g., Program Director, Associate Program Director, GME Administrator, or Faculty Leader).
  • In-depth knowledge of ACGME accreditation, program development, and competency-based education. 
  • Experience designing or implementing competency-based medical education (CBME) models or other innovative training frameworks.
  • Background in medical education research
  • National involvement in ACGME, AAMC, ABMS, AAIM, or other graduate medical education leadership organizations.
