Purpose

The APCCMPD In-service Exam Writing Committee (ISWC) seeks Ad Hoc (AH) committee members to contribute high-quality exam items for the annual in-service examination. AH committee members play a vital role in expanding our question bank and ensuring diverse perspectives in exam content development. Additionally, this program serves as a critical pipeline to ensure smooth succession planning for the ISWC by maintaining a pool of trained item writers who are familiar with committee processes and standards, ready to fill committee vacancies as they arise..

Roles and Responsibilities

AH committee members will:

  • Complete mandatory item writing training provided by APCCMPD.
  • Draft 3-5 exam items per cycle, following established guidelines and quality standards.
  • Virtually present drafted questions to the ISWC during their annual item writing meeting.
  • Incorporate feedback from ISWC members to refine and finalize exam items.
  • Ensure all items meet psychometric standards and align with fellowship curriculum objectives.

Requirements

  • Current Program Director or Associate Program Director of an APCCMPD member program.
  • Board certification in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, or Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine.
  • Commitment to complete item writing training before submitting questions.
  • Availability to attend one virtual ISWC meeting to present drafted items.
  • Adherence to confidentiality requirements regarding exam content.

Time Commitment

  • Virtual Item writing training: 2-3 hours
  • Question development: approximately .5 hour per question
  • Virtual presentation to ISWC: 1 hour
  • Question revision based on feedback: 1-2 hours

Pathway to Full Committee Membership

When openings arise on the ISWC, AH committee members who have demonstrated strong performance and meet the committee's requirements and current expertise needs will be given priority consideration for full committee membership. Selection will be based on:

  • Quality of submitted exam items.
  • Responsiveness to feedback.
  • Professionalism during committee interactions.
  • Committee's current composition and expertise needs.

Term

AH appointments are for one exam cycle, with the opportunity for reappointment based on performance and committee needs.
