APCCMPD Recommendation on Interviews for the 2025/2026 Recruitment Cycle
June 2025

In March 2021 and 2022, the APCCMPD assembled an Interview Task Force to recommend fellowship interviews for the upcoming recruitment cycles. The Interview Task Force comprised 11 volunteer APCCMPD members representing pulmonary, CCM, and PCCM training programs, with diverse geographic distribution and program size. Task Force members included Program Directors, an Associate Program Director, two fellows-in-training, and a Program Coordinator to ensure broad representation.

Looking toward the 2025-2026 recruitment cycle, the APCCMPD built upon the prior work of its Interview Task Force. In February 2025, the APCCMPD program directors of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and PCCM fellowship programs to seek input on preferred interview formats for the upcoming recruitment cycle and the importance of consistency across our subspecialties.

APCCMPD Recommendations:

  1. The APCCMPD recommends that CCM, Pulmonary, and PCCM fellowship interviews be virtual only for all applicants, including local applicants, in the 2025-2026 interview cycle.

"In alignment with the Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD), our national professional society, and to ensure a uniform interview process equitable to all applicants, our fellowship interviews for applicants in 2024-2025 will be held exclusively virtually. We will not offer in-person site visits. The full recommendation is available here.

ERAS Signaling for Pulmonary, PCCM, and CCM Fellowship Programs in the 2025-26 Recruitment Cycle
June 2025

The AAMC ERAS Application program has provided the opportunity for specialty fellowships to participate in ERAS program signaling for the 2026 application cycle.

New for this season, all Pulmonary, PCCM, CCM fellowship programs are automatically opted-in to receive program signals.  Individual programs may elect to opt-out of participating in program signaling by indicating their choice in the Program Management tab of the Program Directors WorkStation (PDWS) and should do so by June 18, 2025.

Based on Internal Medicine residency data and experience, Pulmonary, PCCM, CCM fellowship programs will have 15 tiered program signals for the 2025–2026 recruitment cycle: 3 Gold and 12 Silver.

Based in the experience of the IM residency programs, AAIM recommends that programs clearly state on their website how they will utilize program signals when making interview decisions.  Fellowship programs should modify their respective websites by June 30, 2025

APCCMPD Recommendation on the MyERAS®Application Preferancing for the 2025-2026 recruitment cycle

June 2025

APCCMPD Recommendations for Applicants and Program Directors for the MyERAS®Application in the 2024-2025 Recruitment Cycle
June 27, 2024

The APCCMPD has issued recommendations for applicants when completing the 2024-25 MyERAS® application and program directors who will be reviewing them. Program Directors are encouraged to share these recommendations with the IM Program Director Colleagues for dissemination to applicants.

The APCCMPD includes leaders from Critical Care Medicine (CCM), Pulmonary Medicine, and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM), representing 98% of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowships in these specialties. Its mission is to promote excellence in training and to mentor future pulmonary and critical care medicine educators. Additionally, the APCCMPD provides a communication channel among fellowship programs and stakeholder organizations.

The APCCMPD has a vested interest in all aspects of fellowship recruitment and, in May 2024, established an ERAS Signaling Task Force to offer recommendations on the MyERAS® application for the 2024-2025 recruitment cycle.

In 2023, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) made significant changes to the MyERAS® application, allowing fellowship applicants to indicate potential geographic preferences for programs of interest and providing a revised template for applicants to describe their most meaningful past experiences. The goal is for program directors and fellowship selection committees to use this information to conduct a more comprehensive review of applications, helping them identify applicants who will contribute more effectively to their program's goals and mission.

NRMP Proposed Rank Order List (ROL) Lock Functionality

June 2025

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) is pleased to announce the Voluntary Program Rank Order List (ROL) Lock Pilot initiative with the partnership of the Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Vascular Surgery specialties. Programs in those three specialties will have the opportunity to participate beginning with the 2026 Main Residency Match cycle.  This pilot will make it possible for the NRMP, and participating programs, to explore the merits and utility of voluntary functionality that would allow programs to “lock” their rank order lists in the NRMP’s Registration, Ranking, and Results® (R3®) system.

Additional communications will be forthcoming on the Voluntary Program ROL Lock Pilot. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected]

June 2023

At the NRMP May 2023 Board of Directors meeting, the NRMP Board of Directors reviewed the survey results and the feedback from the public comment process, as well as input gained via listening sessions with stakeholder groups and student and specialty group statements solicited by the NRMP. Given the complexities outlined in the comments from constituents and stakeholders, the NRMP has decided to continue community discussion on the ROL Lock option to understand better how such a proposal could be enhanced and modified to move forward without negatively affecting the process or Match stakeholders. The NRMP will convene a Match Innovations Summit with key stakeholder groups to further examine the proposal and discuss other Match innovations, including a two-phase Match. The APCCMPD intends to represent the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and PCCM Fellowship Communities at this stakeholder summit.

April 2023

The APCCMPD was been asked to respond to The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) regarding the utility of a proposed Rank Order List (ROL) Lock functionality for programs. The APCCMPD’s response to the NRMP was be based on our member’s collective feedback.

  • One letter with Program Director representatives from the IM-Subspecialties: Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Program Directors (APCCMPD); Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism; Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program Directors Council, American Academy of Sleep Medicine; American College of Rheumatology, Committee on Rheumatology Training and Workforce Issues; and the Education & Training Committee of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA); Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
